In this Ask Hytrol, we are going to demonstrate how to properly splice an NBEZ belt.
You will need the following tools: cutter, cooker, guide rail, fine point marker, tape measure, retractable utility knife or pair of band cutters, and a 14mm torque wrench.
First, you want to measure the belt to the desired length. Measure out the belt and put a mark at the length you need. From this mark measure 8 and ¼” more and mark again. Make sure the 8 and ¼” is in addition to the belt length you need or the belt will be too short when you splice it. The second mark is where you will need to cut the belt. Cut the belt as straight as possible.
The next step is to cut fingers in the belt. Lay your roll of belting on a flat surface and put your finger cutter in front of the roll of belting. Now pull each end of the belt to where you have one end of the belt on the left of the cutter and one end on the right. Now take the end of the left side, slide it across the cutting table underneath both hold-downs until it is flush with the right side of the cutting table. Make sure the belt is against the backstop, and then tighten the hold-downs. Before cutting, always make sure the cutting table is in position one. Cut the belt. Next, move the cutting table to position two and cut again. Continue this process until the belt is cut all the way across.
Now that the belt is cut, loosen hold-downs and pull the belt out. Pull out the small cutoff section and discard. Repeat this process on the right side of the cutter. Slide the belt in from right to left stopping flush with the left side of the cutting table. Make sure the cutting table is at position one and cut the belt. Repeat along the right side of the belt as done previously.
Next, we will press the belt. Now that the fingers are cut we will melt the ends together using the hot press. Move the finger cutter out of the way and put your press in its place, in front of the roll. Remove the top section of the press. Lay the bottom part of the belt guide rail on the bottom section of the press. Take each end of the belt and put one end on the left side of the press and the other end on the right. Slide each end of the belt into the bottom piece of the belt guide rail until the ends come together and the fingers of each end are interlocked. Make sure the belt is not twisted in this step.
Once the fingers are interlocked, hold the belt in place while placing the top part of the belt guide rail onto the belt. Next, hold down the guide rail and place the top section of the press on top of the belt guide rail. When the top section is in place, use the supplied torque wrench to tighten down the top section of the press. When tightening the top down, rotate between tightening down the nuts. This is to ensure that the top part of the press will be even on both sides with the bottom part of the press.
Now you are ready to turn on the controller of the hot press. Once the controller is on you will need to check your settings. Both the top and bottom of the press should be set on one hundred and sixty degrees and the cycle time should be set at seven minutes. Once all of this has been confirmed, press the green start button. When the press is done with its cycle it will automatically shut off. After the press has shut off remove the top part of the press and the top part of the belt guide rail. Remove the belt from the guide rail. The belt may be warm so use caution.
You have now successfully spliced an NBEZ belt.
