When choosing a conveyor system, it’s easy to focus solely on throughput, layout, or price. But one critical—and often underestimated—factor is the climate in which your conveyor will operate. Whether your system is exposed to water, extreme cold, or outdoor conditions, environmental factors directly influence equipment performance, longevity, and safety. Washdown Environments: Clean Can Be Mean

Recommendation: Chain driven or minimum pressure conveyors in stainless steel

Washdown-rated conveyor systems are essential for industries with strict sanitation protocols—such as food and beverage processing. However, not all conveyors are created equal in these settings.

• Electrical components and moisture don’t mix. For this reason, we do not recommend EZLogic-equipped or E24™ conveyors in washdown environments.
• O-ring-driven rollers are also unsuitable due to potential drive loss when exposed to water.
• Chain-driven and minimum pressure conveyors can be quoted in stainless steel for washdown use. Other models may require a case-by-case review.
• Important Distinction: galvanized conveyors are not considered washdown-rated.
• Our washdown conveyors are rated for water only—not for chemical or caustic washdown conditions unless otherwise specified.

Freezer Applications: Cold Facts about Low Temps

Recommendation: Roller bed or chain-driven live rollers

Freezers introduce another set of challenges. Extremely low temperatures can impact material flexibility, lubrication, and drive function.

• Hytrol can quote systems for freezer environments down to -20°F.
• To provide an accurate recommendation, we must know the minimum ambient temperature and where the conveyor will be located.
• Doorway zones can be problematic due to temperature fluctuations and condensation, which can freeze and cause mechanical issues.
• Slider beds are not recommended, as belts may freeze to the frame. Instead, roller bed and chain-driven live rollers are the preferred solution here.
• Depending on your specs, we may recommend low-temperature-rated oils, chains, motors, and bearings to ensure consistent performance.

Outdoor Applications: Proceed with Caution

While we engineer for tough environments, Hytrol conveyors are not designed or warranted for outdoor use. Exposure to UV light, precipitation, dust, and temperature shifts can compromise performance and safety. If your project has outdoor elements, we encourage discussing potential alternatives with your integrator or Hytrol representative.
