Environmental Impacts: Leading the way in minimizing the carbon footprint

A large manufacturing facility may not be the first type of organization that comes to mind when thinking of environmentally friendly businesses. However, here at Hytrol, we are proud members of the Natural State and want to do our part to keep the world safe and beautiful. Below is a summary from conducted interviews with Hytrol experts detailing how their teams are succeeding in both global manufacturing and caring for the globe.

A significant part of material handling manufacturing is disposal of leftover materials. Whether it’s raw metal, impure paint, or even cardboard, Hytrol doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to recycling and minimizing waste. Along with our above-and-beyond internal efforts, Hytrol also passes the yearly, mandatory checkups conducted by the city. Courtney Easley, our Safety & Environmental Manager, oversees all Federal reporting requirements, including Tier II and Form R. In addition, keeping our two sites (Fort Smith and Jonesboro) compliant with all local and federal environmental standards, and exceeding requirements.

Clara Henderson, our Continuous Improvement Facilitator, and her team have improved material utilization drastically to 81%, allowing massive amounts of scrap metal to be repurposed instead of being disposed of or left unused. Not to mention, several projects are in the works to internally recycle wood and pallet scraps as well as large amounts of cardboard used in packaging and shipping. This is all in pursuit of raising the sustainability bar in our material production processes.

As far as emissions production is concerned, there are no hazardous levels of air or water waste that require city permits. According to Production Manager, Rick Stevens who oversees Hytrol’s paint department, our steel is colored with a nontoxic, biodegradable powder paint that contains safe PH levels which are harmless to be inhaled and can be disposed of in landfills without causing pollution or damage. Stevens explains this paint strategy not only is better for the environment but also extends the life of the product as it protects the metal from wear and tear.

“Hytrol uses biodegradable powdered paint in our painting process,” Easley added. “We have a paint reclaiming spray booth that collects the paint that is not used and recycles it for future use. We also have a 3rd party company that hauls off the little paint waste that is generated in a proper, efficient manner.”

No matter the material or waste, Hytrol strives to be conscientious about resource consumption while making and shipping our industry-leading conveying solutions. Practical sustainability efforts such as these are what make healthy communities and healthy businesses thrive whilst doing what they do best.
